The following info on the medication Prozac®(fluoxetine) is for the consumer. The
following infomation should be verified by a doctor or a pharmacist. What is Prozac® medication? Prozac® (fluoxetine) medication, is an antidepressant drug approved in 1987 by the FDA and is presently available for treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bulimia nervosa. Prozac® is thought to work by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain. Prozac® is a type of the serotonin-reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) family, such as Zoloft® (sertraline) and Paxil® (paroxetine). What can be some of the side effects of taking Prozac®? Some of the side effects from Prozac® can include anxiety or nervousness, insomnia, drowsiness, headache, diarrhea, and rash. Sexual dysfunction effects (reduced arousal or satisfaction) may occur. Prozac® sometimes causes changes in appetite and weight. (Usually weight loss, not weight gain) Side effects are usually mild and brief, disappearing in a week or two after beginning doses. If any particularly irritating side effects occur, see a Doctor to discuss alternative treatments. How does the medication Prozac® interact with other drugs? Do not take Prozac® until at least two weeks after MAOIs (e.g., Nardil and Parnate) medications are discontinued. Similarly, do not take MAOIs for at least five weeks after the treatment with Prozac® has been discontinued. The interaction between the two could produce fatal results. Always consult with your doctor when taking medications in addition to the prescribed antidepressant. Do not take alcohol when taking any prescibed antidepressants. What is the standard dosage of Prozac® medication? Prozac® is utilized to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bulimia nervosa. For treatment of depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, a dosage of 20 mg/day, taken when you wake up in the morning, is recommended at first. A dosage increase may be required after several weeks if lacking sufficient clinical improvement. The maximum dose of Prozac® should not exceed 80 mg per 24 hours. For treatment of bulimia nervosa, a recommended dosage is 60 mg/day, taken when you wake up in the morning. Prozac® dosages above 60 mg per 24 hours have not been fully studied in people with bulimia nervosa. How long should someone take Prozac®? There are no studies that answer the question of how long a person should continue Prozac®. Depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bulimia nervosa are usually chronic conditions. A long term treatment for a patient who is responding well can be considered by a doctor. After 6 months, for depression in particular, it is reasonable to consider trying to reduce the dosage to see whether depression symptoms return. As with any other medications, the discontinuation of Prozac® should be discussed with your doctor. Do not just stop taking Prozac®, discuss a plan for discontinuation with your doctor. Dosage adjustments should maintain the patient on the lowest effective dosage, and patients should be periodically reassessed by their doctor to determine the need for continued medication. How soon after starting treatment of Prozac® will I start to feel better? A person begining treatment with Prozac® may notice some improvement, in concentration and energy, within one week of starting treatment. As with the other antidepressants, it usually takes at least three to six weeks for the full therapeutic effect of the drug to be noticed. The drug should be taken at the prescribed dose for at least a six full weeks before deciding its effectiveness. |
