The following info is on the medication Celexa®(citalopram) and its possible side
effects. This is to provide basic facts about the drug and it's use. Please consult
a doctor or pharmacist to verify the below facts for the substance citalopram.
What is Celexa® medication? Celexa® (citalopram hydrobromide) is a highly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that was approved by the FDA in the U.S.A. for the treatment of depression in July of 1998. It is a widely recommended and prescribed medication both in the United States and in many other places around the globe. Celexa® was made by a Danish pharmaceutical firm called H. Lundbeck A/S and is sold in the U.S. by Forest Laboratories. How is the medication Celexa® different from other antidepressants? Celexa® has a chemical make up differing to other SSRIs. It is a highly selective inhibitor of serotonin reuptake with small or no affinity for the other neurotransmitter receptors. Celexa® may also cause less drug interactions than some other SSRI antidepressants, which can make it a great choice for the elderly or those with terminal illnesses. Additionally, Celexa® appears to be safe for use for a long-term basis and may cause less withdrawal symptoms than other antidepressants when use is no longer needed. What are some of the possible side effects of Celexa®? The side effects seem to be less extreme than the other SSRI medications. Sweating, sleepiness, nausea, tremor, dry mouth, lack or loss of strength, headache, weight loss or gain, dizziness, and restlessness are some such side effects which usually decrease in intensity and frequency as the depression state improves. Sexual side effects may also occur, and these will often not diminish over time. Always consult your doctor before taking any other medications while on Celexa® to avoid serious drug interactions. What is the standard recommended dose of Celexa®? Celexa® should be taken as a single oral dosage of 20 mg per 24 hours. Depending on doctor's advice and individual patient response, this may be increased to a maximum of 60 mg per 24 hours for adults or 30 mg daily for the elderly. |
